Large Leaf Sorrel Microgreens

A Specialty, Gourmet Garnish and Ingredient

Large leaf sorrel microgreens are sort of a specialty product, but don't let the note that it's got a sour flavor turn you off. Large leaf sorrel goes great anywhere you'd use lemon because it's got a very lemony flavor. So, think seafood, fish, and chicken! Maybe even a tangy, refreshing summer drink—once the weather warms up! The lemon-like taste of large leaf sorrel means these microgreens go well in soups, tossed in with salad, and especially as an accent in sauces and dressings which is where we think this product shines! Along with great flavor, large leaf sorrel also looks amazing atop just about any dish! Keep reading to take your meals from bland toward more gourmet by simply sprinkling large leaf sorrel microgreens on top as a garnish.

Marinade Ingredients (as always, Iocal and fresh is best!):

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 sprig thyme, chopped

1 sprig rosemary, chopped

2 tablespoons large leaf sorrel, chopped

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Prepare the Shrimp:

Peel and devein one pound of shrimp.

Set the shrimp aside.

Mix all remaining ingredients together to make the marinade.

Toss the shrimp in the marinade, cover, and let sit in the fridge for 15-30 minutes.

Since this recipe is more about the marinade than the shrimp, check out this article on How to Cook Shrimp So They're Juicy, Not Rubbery.

After marinating the shrimp for about one-half hour, they're ready for the grill (or whatever method you prefer to cook them). Once your cooked shrimp are ready to go, you'll need something to serve them with—the 30-minute prep time is a great opportunity to whip up whatever else you're serving!

To prepare and serve what you see in the photos, Luke skewered and grilled the shrimp on a cast iron griddle set atop our antique wood cook stove, over medium heat. If your kitchen is a bit more modern than ours, a regular frying pan used to pan-fry the shrimp (less the skewer!) will get you close to this result, or if the weather is nice, your outdoor barbecue will work great as well! Luke also fried up some peppers and onions (while the shrimp was marinating) to set the shrimp on top of, but you can serve your shrimp along with just about anything—rice, pasta, other veggies, etc. After setting the amazingly tasty grilled shrimp over one of our favorite accompaniments—onions and peppers—he garnished it with fresh large leaf sorrel leaves to add the extra lemony flavor and eye-catching visual appeal microgreens are known for!

Enjoy!

Microgreen Sorrel's Show-Stopping Flavor and Eye Appeal

Luke was grilling the shrimp in the above photo while I was writing last week's blog post. All morning long I'd been hungry and craving something meaty and satisfying. After snapping these photos, we sat down to enjoy the amazing meal. Let me tell you, if you're looking at the photos and salivating, it's with good reason! Words can't even begin to describe just how good this meal was! In the words of one of our boys, it was "SO SATISFYING!" I'm not sure exactly what it would have tasted like without microgreens, however, savoring each bite and sensing the individual taste of each large leaf sorrel leaf added to the experience in a really unique way. We sat together and enjoyed this meal like two little kids sneaking hidden pieces of candy.

Is your mouth watering yet?! This lemony large leaf sorrel microgreen marinade was awesome with grilled shrimp, and it will work well with chicken or fish too! The tangy lemon flavor of large leaf sorrel lends itself to so many dishes, anything that needs a bit of zing! It's time to put shrimp on your dinner menu and get some large leaf sorrel on order! You'll be glad you did! It's nice to go out and enjoy a meal someone else prepares and cleans up every once in a while, but with microgreens, there's no reason we can't enjoy near-gourmet meals at home in an intimate setting. This marinade recipe along with a few leaves as garnish is a great example of what's possible with a little creative thinking, and some magnificent microgreens!
