How to Choose and Store Microgreens

When it comes to purchasing microgreens, it's essential to choose fresh and vibrant greens. Look for microgreens that have crisp stems and vibrant leaves. Avoid greens with signs of wilting or discoloration. Our home delivery customers receive greens at the absolute peak of freshness and flavor! On freshness, we deliver to customers within 24 hours of harvest, usually within just a few hours! On flavor, there is a big change between when the first and second sets of leaves mature—flavors often go from a delicious and enhanced version of the mature plant... to bitter. For that reason, we aim to harvest before greens fully develop their second set of leaves. Harvesting soon after the first set of leaves ensures enjoyable flavors that often pleasantly surprise most new to this sort of fresh produce! Also, be sure to check the harvest date to ensure freshness! Once you get them home, to store microgreens, keep them refrigerated in a sealed container. Some people like to add a paper towel to absorb excess moisture to help prolong their shelf life and maintain their crispness. Fresh greens will last more than a week in the fridge and we frequently hear from folks that, even at two weeks, they're still delicious and crisp.

Where to Buy Microgreens

Buy microgreens from Back Mountain Microgreens, of course! Not in the Back Mountain area? Check out your local farmers markets and talk to your local grocer’s produce manager to have them do the sourcing work for you. They may have relationships with local farms who would appreciate expanding into this new market! We fully support buying local from small businesses because we're a small business and local buyers sustain us! That said, if you're in the market for microgreens and are having trouble sourcing them locally, please let us know! We've had folks ask if we ship and it has come up often enough that we are beginning to evaluate how to make it happen. The more feedback we get, the more effort we'll put into moving forward with adding shipping as an option for future orders.

If you are in the Back Mountain, there are three ways to buy:

From a Local Retailer

Check out our FAQ page for an up to date list of where to buy our tiny but mighty microgreens! This list changes periodically, so be sure to check back often. As of the date of this posting, we're selling at:

  • Hillside Farms

  • The Barn Nutrition & Fitness

  • The Farm Basket

One-Time Delivery

Place a one-off order, online. We'll reach out for payment once we verify our greenhouse has the capacity to grow your order. Once you pay, your seeds will start growing with our next batch and you'll be added to the delivery schedule. A day or so before delivery we'll reach out to work out the details—which usually entails answering whether to ring the doorbell or look for a cooler on your porch.

Please note, we grow-to-order. Check out our FAQ page to learn more about what that means.

Delivery Subscription

Place a recurring order, online. This is similar to placing a one-time delivery order, however there are some key benefits! Our grow-to-order business model means there is a roughly two-week lead time for the majority of our orders. We don't plant seeds until payment is received, and it takes our seeds about 10 days to grow. When a one time order is placed, it's roughly two weeks till it's delivered. Sometimes waiting the two weeks isn't an attractive option. That's why we've got products in local stores though! 😉 One benefit of delivery vs buying in stores is freshness! For those wanting fresh microgreens delivered on a regular basis, a delivery subscription offers that freshness, and (after the initial two-week grow time) remedies the issue of waiting for greens to be delivered. We offer delivery subscriptions on a weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly basis.
