Back Mountain Microgreens is now Sow-to-Grow!

How we got started with growing-to-order

Back Mountain Microgreens was an investment for our family. In the beginning, we only planted seeds when you ordered. This decision helped us reduce waste and saved us from throwing out microgreens. …We wanted to have orders to fulfill before we invested the soil, seeds, electricity and heat it takes to grow the greens! Until we had regular orders coming in, growing-to-order was our best—or most financially responsible—bet. This post explains exactly how we got started with growing to order. Unfortunately, there were some holes in the grow-to-order process!

The Down Side of Growing to Order

Oh boy! We learned that there is more than one downside when growing to order!

First, the wait! We expected you to wait weeks for your orders. Ugh! We totally get it. That’s a no-go!

Second, flexibility. We were stuck with only having what we planted available! This didn’t really work out for us when it came to having products available to offer as samples and extras to take to pop-up shops and markets.

For these reasons (and more), we’re graduating from Grow-to-Order!

The goal of the old philosophy was to use it as a tool to protect our business, but what we found is that it slowed down our business growth! That’s not to say protecting our business isn’t important, only that the grow-to-order process was the wrong tool for the job.

Grow-to-Order is out, Sow-to-Grow is in!

To grow Back Mountain Microgreens, we need to sow some serious seeds—literally and figuratively! Three weeks ago, we did away with growing to order and decided to sow extra. A lot extra. Since making that decision, and sowing extra each week since, we’ve nearly sold out of microgreens each time.

Having extra greens has given us

so much flexibility!

We’ve been able to offer more samples to businesses interested in partnering with us—and it’s resulted in several new accounts for us. We’ve also been able to quickly fulfill one-off orders we would not have been able to satisfy otherwise!

Getting new customers and keeping existing customers happy has been so encouraging for us!

Back Mountain Microgreens is growing, and it’s exciting! Grow-to-Order was originally meant to protect us, but the last three weeks have shown us that now is the right time to take on a bit more risk because our goal is always to grow our business along with your microgreens. This transition, to growing greens in anticipation of your orders, is a big change—but we think it’s necessary!

It’s all about the harvest!

Now that we’ve made the choice to transition away from growing-to-order, our timelines revolve around when we harvest.

Check out our Events to find out when we harvest next.

Regardless of what season it is, we’ll be sowing extra seeds to help grow our business because we recognize that you want your microgreens sooner rather than later!

To meet and exceed your expectations, when you order, we’ll check what we’ve got growing and pluck your order from our next scheduled harvest—which means a local pick-up, local delivery, or shipping date that’s likely within days of placing your order!

We’re excited about fulfilling your microgreens order as quickly as possible!

It’s a big deal for us to be able to offer you an awesome selection of super-fresh, organically-grown microgreens—available within days rather than weeks! So… check out what’s available below and get your order in!
