Back Mountain Microgreens Grow-to-Order Process

What does grow to order mean? Let's go over the details! We live in an age of instant gratification. We're used to entering our payment and shipping info and getting what we've paid for within a day or so. Overnight fulfillment and deliveries are the norm now and when "instant" isn't on the menu, it's outside our realm of expectations. When it comes to local farming though, selling organically-grown, fresh produce is a bit different than offering non-perishables. The word "perishable" is the hinge pin when it comes to why we buck the instant gratification status quo. We strive to offer quality, fresh produce—and to ensure you receive high quality microgreens (i.e., microgreens at peak freshness), we don't sow seeds until we receive your order. All of our growing is specifically tailored to individual customer orders, whether you're ordering a few clamshells for yourself, or lots for your restaurant or catering business. Below are a few points regarding what's likely familiar about our grow-to-order process, and what might be a bit different from what you're used to when ordering online.

What's the same:

  • Order Online—we collect orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Payment—pay at checkout.

  • Confirmation—payment/order confirmations are emailed immediately following checkout.

  • Tracking—no FedEx or UPS tracking number, but we will be in touch via text to let you know your delivery date, and a day or so prior to delivery we'll reach out to arrange details specific to your delivery. Not necessarily the same as tracking other online orders, but what is the same is that we're always available to answer questions—feel free to phone, text, or email us!

What's different:

  • Order Cutoffs—place orders by Sunday in order to have your seeds sown with that week's batch.

  • Delivery Day:

    • Back Mountain Microgreens delivers once a week—Fridays, between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm.

    • If you will not be available to accept your delivery, we'll need a place to deposit your microgreens—i.e., a cooler under the bench on your back porch (let us know in the notes when placing your order please 😊).

  • Lead Time:

    • Delivery dates are dependent on the products ordered—multiple products (on the same order), with different grow times, will all deliver on the day that allows for the longest grow time.

      • For example: Let's say I place an order on Saturday afternoon for a weekly microgreens subscription for 2 Sunflower, 1 Pea, and 1 Rainbow Swiss Chard. I ordered prior to the Sunday Cutoff, but even though Sunflower and Pea have a 2-week grow time, my first order won't deliver until the Fourth Friday because the Rainbow Swiss Chard has a 4-week grow time. Subsequent subscription orders will renew each week—so the only four week waiting period is in regards to the first order.

    • Most products deliver within two weeks, however, some products have grow times up to 4 weeks. Check each product category to be sure!

Growing Microgreens to Order is About the Journey, Not the Destination

At Back Mountain Microgreens, one of our goals is to operate a sustainable farming business. To us, a sustainable business is one that gets better with time. One that won't go belly up a year or so in. Why? We depend on this business to support our family—we need it to last, and not only to eek by, but to grow and thrive for years to come! We're thinking long-term. Good things take time, and our goal for Back Mountain Microgreens is for this business to get better with age!

Instead of focusing on sales dollars and product launches, it's more about what we mention in our story, we want to get every part of our business right. It's all about quality. The relationships with our vendors and customers are important. The content we publish on the health benefits and eye appeal of microgreens is important. The products themselves, the quality of your microgreens, is important. All of these things aren't measured at one point in time—the quality of everything we do—is an ongoing journey.

It's just like life, right? It's not about the destination, or getting somewhere specific at one point in time. It's about what we build up all along the way—the journey, the story that people will remember about us, and our business, after years and years and years.

Sustainable Local Farming Processes Equal Greater Savings and Value for Customers

So, what does all of this mean for you? Well, our desire to support our family by operating a business that gets better with time is that what we offer is the best of what we're capable of. We're putting our hearts and souls into what we do—because, for us, it's the only way to operate. Don't get me wrong, we all fall short every once in a while. Luke and I have days when we're on top of the world, and days when we're not exactly on par with our own standards. Just like some seeds that grow like crazy from one batch, and disappoint us in another. But the long and short of it is we're doing our best at every opportunity. The sum total of what you get from us, now, and in the future, is our very best—from our products, to our processes, relationships, attitudes; when text messages go out, and when orders come in, etc.! The best part is, it's only going to get better… because we sincerely enjoy growing microgreens for you!

Are you as healthy as you want to be?

We want to help you enjoy eating healthy. We also just so happen to sell organically-grown local, nutritious, microgreens.
